Sustainable Urban Design

In the current global context of an unprecedented rate of urbanisation, alongside rapidly depleting natural resources, urban planning and urban design are emerging as disciplines that will have a crucial role to play in the development and management of future habitat. However with the recognition of current environmental problems, as well as current urbanisation trends, these disciplines are recently being revisited and include shifts and new approaches to the subject. While in developed countries, new urbanisation is associated with poverty, social segregation, and rapid environmental degradation; in many developed countries, the issues are de-industrialisation, and shrinking population. In both cases the consumption patterns and current approached to management of natural resources are proving to be unsustainable, and are widely acknowledged to be a global concern.

This ‘Sustainable Urban Design’ program will begin by broadly introducing, the unprecedented challenges of urbanisation today including climate change, dependence on fossil fuels, economic challenges and insecurities, social and spatial segregation, shortage of water and food, and pollution and health concerns.

The areas of sustainable urban design that will be entered in depth are integrated thinking, sustainability criteria, design recommendations and policies, climate appropriate developments, urban indicators; territory, site planning and landscaping; sustainable mobility and public space; integrated approaches to urban management of water, waste and energy, and participatory planning and social integration.

The teaching and learning strategy is through group work and investigation, through applied theory, exposure to case-studies, active participation and peer to peer discussions and collaborations. Class times are not entirely meant to be one-way lectures by the professor. Instead each 3 hour session consists of an introductory presentation by the professor followed by discussions of group investigations of the theme in question. The method is one of an active learning model that relies of preparatory work by students, supported by previously circulated reading reading material, and group research.

Efficiency, Affordability, Architecture

In the current global context of rapidly depleting natural resources, climate change related anticipated habitat loss, and an unprecedented rate of urbanization, affordability has globally emerged as a key issue in the development of habitat design for the present and future. The word affordability goes beyond economic terms to include thinking about what kind of habitat is affordable in environmental terms, and probing into the invisible hidden costs of housing on the environment as a whole.

Sustainability criteria in architecture include environmental sustainability. social sustainability and economic sustainability. The program will introduce the existence and broad content of criteria of various rating systems for evaluating architecture in terms of sustainability and reflect upon their relevance in measuring performance as well as the short-comings.

Affordability of housing is emerging as a growing concern world wide, and resulting in an ever widening gap between rich and poor, and leading to cities which have sharp spatial and social segregations that are the common feature in most emerging urban developments. Poverty and urban poverty, important economic issues are inseparable from social issues and affect urban habitat. These issues will be examined.

The areas of efficient architectural design that will be entered in depth are integrated thinking, including climate responsive architecture that reduces energy demand; building integrated services for water management, waste management and energy supply where hybrid systems with various sources are combined and supplied to various demands according to quality; choice of building materials and their implications, energy efficiency through reducing energy demand, embodied energy, efficient appliances and the integration of renewable energy source, and social integration through participation and self-build.
